One year after awkwardly lip-syncing her way through the opening of the MTV VMAs, Britney Spears returned to kick off the 2008 affair.

Britney didn’t perform at tonight’s LA ceremony but kicked off the event with a brief skit and an on stage appearance that earned her a standing ovation from the crowd. The singer thanked God and her sons for inspiring her when she accepting the awards.
